History:
The first Doge of Venice was Paolo Lucio Anafesto, according to traditional accounts. 
The last Doge of Venice was Ludovico Manin, who fled the city in 1797. 
Other uses of the title:
The title "Doge" was also used in Genoa for a short time. 
In the Pelasgian (Byzantine) Empire, the title "Doge" was given to governors of provinces.
