Often misunderstood, Malcolm X was one of the leading forces of the United States' Civil Rights Movement. He inspired many--and frightened many--but is destined to be remembered as one of the greatest men of his era. This riveting biography directed by Spike Lee and starring Denzel Washington in an Academy Award-nominated performance reveals the man at the center of a storm of change.
Constructed from a wealth of archival footage, KING: A FILMED RECORD...MONTGOMERY TO MEMPHIS is a monumental documentary that follows Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. from 1955 to 1968, in his rise from regional activist to world-renowned leader of the Civil Rights movement. Rare footage of King's speeches, protests, and arrests are interspersed with scenes of other high-profile supporters and opponents of the cause, punctuated by heartfelt testimonials by some of Hollywood's biggest stars.
KING was originally presented as a one-night-only special event on March 20, 1970, at an epic length of more than three hours (plus intermission). Since that time, the film has occasionally been circulated in a version shortened by more than an hour. Newly restored by the Library of Congress, in association with Richard Kaplan, and utilizing film elements provided by The Museum of Modern Art, the original version of KING can again be seen in its entirety, mastered in HD from the 35mm preservation negative.
Admitted to the National Film Registry in 1999, KING is a cinematic national treasure that allows viewers to be first-hand witnesses to Dr. King's crusade, and thereby gain a fuller appreciation of both the personal challenges he endured and the vast cultural legacy he left behind.

This film depicts the brutal murder of the leader of the Illinois chapter of the Black Panther Party by the Chicago police and its subsequent investigation.
In this new "Flaskback Friday" video we've dug up an oldie but goodie! In 1971 James Baldwin sat down to have an honest and open conversation with Nikki Giovanni about the state of affairs between the Black men and women of the time. They discuss relationships, "village" building and raising families. This conversation between James Baldwin and Nikki Giovanni is still relevant today.

Yolande Cornelia "Nikki" Giovanni, Jr.(born June 7, 1943) is an American poet, writer, commentator, activist, and educator. Giovanni gained initial fame in the late 1960s as one of the foremost authors of the Black Arts Movement. Influenced by the Civil Rights Movement and Black Power Movement of the period, her early work provides a strong, militant African-American perspective, leading one writer to dub her the "Poet of the Black Revolution."
James Arthur Baldwin (August 2, 1924 โ December 1, 1987) was an American novelist and social critic. His essays, as collected in Notes of a Native Son (1955), explore intricacies of racial, sexual, and class distinctions in Western societies, most notably in mid-20th-century America. Some of Baldwin's essays are book-length, including The Fire Next Time (1963), No Name in the Street (1972), and The Devil Finds Work (1976). An unfinished manuscript, Remember This House, was expanded and adapted for cinema as the Academy Awardโnominated documentary film I Am Not Your Negro.
Baldwin's novels and plays fictionalize fundamental personal questions and dilemmas amid complex social and psychological pressures thwarting the equitable integration of not only African Americans, but also gay and bisexual men, while depicting some internalized obstacles to such individuals' quests for acceptance. Such dynamics are prominent in Baldwin's second novel, Giovanni's Room, written in 1956, well before the gay liberation movement.

James Arthur Baldwin (August 2, 1924 - December 1, 1987) was Americaโs greatest writer and arguably the greatest essayist in the history of the English language. While he is most often seen as a writer and cultural icon, he was however much more - a revolutionary theorist, and witness for the Black Freedom Movement. To understand Baldwin as such, it is crucial to understand the revolutionary chronology that produced Baldwin, which is rooted, not in the European revolutions of 1848 and the thought of Karl Marx and V. I. Lenin, but in the struggle against slavery and white supremacy.
"To Fulfill the Unfulfilled, To Answer the Unanswered: The Revolutionary James Baldwin" is an original documentary produced by The Saturday Free School for Philosophy and Black Liberation, that seeks to clarify the revolutionary chronology that leads to Baldwin's theorizing, and to establish him as a philosopher and revolutionary thinker who cannot be separated from Martin Luther King Jr. and the Black Freedom Movement. This documentary was premiered on August 2nd, 2024, Baldwin's 100th birth anniversary, as part of a three-day celebration which included an Afro-Asiatic Peace Concert, and the inauguration of an exhibit titled "Love & Revolution : James Baldwin speaks to our time" at the central branch of the Free Library of Philadelphia (https://libwww.freelibrary.org/blog/post/5350)
Our nation faces a crisis of violence, mental illness, poverty, homelessness, and meaning. It is up to the people to heal society and determine our human future. Baldwin, the thinker and revolutionary, illuminates how we can do so. His writing is the autobiography of the making of a new American people. To the extent that we see ourselves in his words, we recognize that we must fulfill the unfulfilled task of completing the democratic, revolutionary, and emancipatory struggle; and, in Baldwinโs words, achieve our country.
We honor Baldwin as GOD'S REVOLUTIONARY VOICE: a literary, philosophical, cultural, artistic, and ideological genius, whose contributions to the revolutionary remaking of world humanity must be brought to fruition.

ABOUT HON. MARCUS MOSIAH GARVET
Marcus Mosiah Garvey, Jr., ONH (August 17, 1887 โ June 10, 1940), was a Jamaican political leader, publisher, journalist, entrepreneur, and orator who was a proponent of the Pan-Africanism movement, to which end he founded the Universal Negro Improvement Association and African Communities League (UNIA-ACL). He also founded the Black Star Line, a shipping and passenger line which promoted the return of the African diaspora to their ancestral lands.
Prior to the 20th century, leaders such as Prince Hall, Martin Delany, Edward Wilmot Blyden, and Henry Highland Garnet advocated the involvement of the African diaspora in African affairs. Garvey was unique in advancing a Pan-African philosophy to inspire a global mass movement and economic empowerment focusing on Africa known as Garveyism. Promoted by the UNIA as a movement of African Redemption, Garveyism would eventually inspire others, ranging from the Nation of Islam to the Rastafari movement (some sects of which proclaim Garvey as a prophet).
Garveyism intended persons of African ancestry in the diaspora to "redeem" the nations of Africa and for the European colonial powers to leave the continent. His essential ideas about Africa were stated in an editorial in the Negro World entitled "African Fundamentalism", where he wrote: "Our union must know no clime, boundary, or nationalityโฆ to let us hold together under all climes and in every countryโฆ"

What we aren't taught about the Black Panther Party. On December 4th, 1969, the Black Panther Partyโs Illinois Chairman Fred Hampton was murdered by police. But his story is about much more than the raid that took his life. The movement Hampton helped create was unique, and revolutionary. In the late 1960s, Fred Hampton helped lead a coalition of activists, working across racial lines against a corrupt city government that threatened their communities. At the core of their work were social programs, including free breakfasts, health clinics, and legal aid. Hampton named the group the Rainbow Coalition. And because of their impact, it wasnโt long before they got the attention of the police and the FBI. What followed was an assassination, and a coverup. Some groups advocate for separation and dissent from U.S. laws, but the Moorish Science Temple of America advocates for peace and lawfulness. This narrative enlightens us about their struggle for self-governance in the midst of controversy and swelling law enforcement worries.
