Africa is the poorest continent in the world. There are, as always, a lot of factors to consider as to why that is the case, but recently Daron Acemoglu and James A. Robinson from MIT have released a study detailing the surprising bigger factors in why Africa still struggles to build wealth despite massive amounts of incoming aid and charity work trying to improve the lives of people there. So what are the reasons why much of Africa can't seem to get out of poverty?

Interview with Cobus Loots, CEO of Pan African Resources (AIM:PAF).

We don't tend to like investing in gold producers as they rarely perform for shareholders. But we like this one, a lot. The CEO is brutally and refreshingly honest. He spends lot of time pointing out the difficulties in mining and operating in mining and mining in South Africa. See the company Presentation and he spells it out there too.

However, they make it work. They have a long track record of producing gold and paying dividends. Last year they suspended the dividend payments their debt borrowing for the new plant was the focus, however, they are planning to pay a dividend (subject to shareholder vote in November!). The Audit Results are out today. The numbers are extremely encouraging and show a tremendous growth across the company. Cobus Loots talks about how they have done it and what the growth targets are in the short term. We were impressed about the way they think about capital allocation. Investing in their assets, they want to repay the debt on balance sheet, paying a dividend and how to deliver growth.

They still have a lot to do but think this team is rigorous in its planning and methodical is how it delivers its projects.

West African Resources (ASX: WAF) has commenced construction of its Sanbrado Gold Project, a high-grade gold discovery in Burkina Faso, West Africa. First gold from Sanbrado is expected in mid-2020, with the first 12 months of production schedule to produce over 300,000oz gold at AISC of less than US$600/oz.

Numbers out of Pan African Resources this morning show a 29% increase in revenue from gold sales to 68.5 million pounds for the year to June. Headline earnings a share rose 26% to 1.07 pence. Joining me from the London Stock Exchange with more on the numbers and the prospects is CEO Jan Nelson.

Pan African Resources' full year headline earnings per share climbed just over 12 percent to 1.2 pence, as revenue increased from gold sales and a higher bullion price. A final dividend of 7.4 million pounds sterling has been proposed. The miner remains unhedged and debt free, and says it is therefore able to fund all mine capital expenditure internally. ABN's Godfrey Mutizwa chats to company CEO Jan Nelson.
