ABOUT RUNOKO RASHIDI

Runoko Rashidi is an anthropologist and historian with a major focus on what he calls the Global African Presence–that is, Africans outside of Africa before and after enslavement. He is the author or editor of eighteen books, the most recent of which are My Global Journeys in Search of the African Presence and Assata-Garvey and Me: A Global African Journey for Children in 2017. His other works include Black Star: The African Presence in Early Europe, published by Books of Africa in London in November 2011 and African Star over Asia: The Black Presence in the East, published by Books of Africa in London in November 2012 and revised and reprinted in April 2013 and Uncovering the African Past: The Ivan Van Sertima Papers, published by Books of Africa in 2015. His other works include the African Presence in Early Asia, co-edited by Dr. Ivan Van Sertima. Four of Runoko’s works have been published in French.


ABOUT THE AMERICAN LOWS WEB SERIES

The American LOWS (Legacy Of White Supremacy) Web Series is a companion to the feature length documentary film The American LOWS directed by Darnley R. Hodge, Jr. (aka Brother Saankara) for Blackamoor Films LLC.

The American LOWS is an interview-based documentary that examines the global system of white supremacy and the evolution of that system in America. Interviewees include some of the nations top scholars, politicians, and authorities. The web series mostly features interview out takes that were not included in the full length film.

STORYLINE:
Louis Farrakhan stressed religious unity in his last major speech before standing down as Nation of Islam leader at the group's three-day convention in Detroit on Sunday.
He told delegates that the world is at war because Christians, Muslims and people of other faiths are divided.
The 73-year-old Farrakhan told his audience that Jesus Christ and the Prophet Muhammad would embrace each other with love if they were on the stage behind him.
The fiery orator spoke for the first time since ceding leadership of the movement last year because of illness.
The speech was the climax of the Nation of Islam's three-day convention in the city where it was founded in 1930.
"Between the sowing and the reaping, God always raises somebody to call the nation and the people to repentance. Elijah Muhammed was that one. And I am his extension. But my time is up," said Farrakhan.
The leader of 1995's Million Man March in Washington, DC said he is leaving at a time of great conflict in the world.
He said he believes God is angry with leaders who are putting politics and greed above serving their fellow man.
Unity was the path forward, according to Farrakhan.
"Christians and Muslims, we have to break down these artificial divisions that divide us and come together as a family," he said.
And Farrakhan had special advice for the US Congress.
"What should they do about a man lying to the American people, deceiving the members of Congress, prosecuting an unjust war? Is that not only reason to impeach him but to set down his whole administration? Set down his whole administration. All of them are liars. All of them are murderers," he said.
The Nation of Islam, which promotes black empowerment and nationalism, was rebuilt by Farrakhan in the late 1970s after WD Mohammed, the son of long-time leader Elijah Mohammed, moved his followers toward mainstream Islam.
Farrakhan became notorious for calling Judaism a "gutter religion" and suggesting crack cocaine might have been a CIA plot to enslave blacks.
He met with foreign leaders at odds with the United States - Moammar Gadhafi, Fidel Castro and Saddam Hussein - prompting the State Department in 1996 to accuse him of "cavorting with dictators."

Kwasi Konadu is John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Endowed Chair and Professor at Colgate University, where he teaches courses in African history and on worldwide African histories and cultures. With extensive archival and field research in West Africa, Europe, Brazil, the Caribbean, and North America, his writings focus on African and African diasporic histories, as well as major themes in world history. He is the author of Our Own Way in This Part of the World: Biography of an African Community, Culture, and Nation (Duke University Press, 2019), (with Clifford Campbell) The Ghana Reader: History, Culture, Politics (Duke University Press, 2016), Transatlantic Africa, 1440-1888 (Oxford University Press, 2014), The Akan Diaspora in the Americas (Oxford University Press, 2010), among other books.

A father and husband first and foremost, Konadu is also a healer (Tanɔ ɔbosomfoɔ) who studied with his grandfather in Jamaica and then in Takyiman (central Ghana) as well as a publisher of scholarly books about African world histories and cultures through Diasporic Africa Press. His life work is devoted to knowledge production and the worldwide communities and struggles of peoples of African ancestry.
