In 1962, a confrontation with the LAPD outside a mosque resulted in the death of a Nation of Islam member. It was an event seized on by an outraged Malcolm X, who would condemn it in an impassioned speech.

Extract from Black Muslims (1963). Watch the complete programme on BFI Player (UK only): http://player.bfi.org.uk/film/....watch-black-muslims-

In a groundbreaking report for current affairs series This Week, Malcolm X is interviewed about his beliefs during a trial following the shooting of seven black men by the LAPD at a Los Angeles mosque. Though the report couches the incident and the popularity of the Nation of Islam in terms typical of the time, much of the film features Malcolm X discussing the tenets of Elijah Muhammad and making his own searing case for reparations and separation. As coverage of a trial in which black men were charged with assault following a fatal shooting by police, this film remains strikingly relevant.

Malcolm X, an influential African American leader, was assassinated on February 21, 1965, in Harlem. Born Malcolm Little, he faced racial oppression early in life and joined the Nation of Islam while in prison. He became a prominent preacher advocating for black independence but broke with the Nation after a pilgrimage to Mecca in 1964, promoting racial unity. Facing increasing threats from the Nation of Islam and possibly the U.S. government, he was ultimately killed during a speech. Despite his death, Malcolm X's legacy endures, inspiring movements for social justice and equality worldwide.
