Natural resources, or commodities, are the raw inputs that are used to manufacture and produce all of the products in the world. These natural resources which include those extracted from the earth and those that have yet to be extracted, are worth trillions of dollars but not every country in Africa has the same amount or type of natural resources. Therefore, in no particular order, here are the top 10 African countries with the most natural resources.
10. Tanzania (Gold, Iron, Nickel, Uranium, oil and Gas, Arable land and ocean)
Tanzania is also very rich in minerals such as gold, diamond, iron, coal, nickel, tanzanite, uranium and natural gas. Recently natural offshore gas deposits have been discovered and as the name of the country implies, Tanzania is the only supplier in the world of the rare gemstone called tanzanite. Except for that, the country also produces gold and is the fourth richest country in Africa in terms of gold. Throughout the decades, the gold mining industry of Tanzania fluctuated. This was happening until the 90s when some famous foreign companies decided to invest in the Tanzanian treasures. Nowadays, they have the standard mines multiplied, to enhance investment and development of their resources. While agriculture is a large contribution to the economy of the country, the gold and tanzanite trade doestoo. Mineral exports really help and boost the Tanzanian economic conditions.
9. Guinea (baurxite, aluninium, iron, diamond, gold, Arable land and ocean)
Guinea has abundant natural resources including 25% or more of the world's known bauxite reserves. Guinea is a clear leader in bauxite potential and export, producing 95% of the entire bauxite production of Africa. Except for Guinea, which produces the natural ingredient for aluminum, all the other countries use the synthetically made product. Guinea possesses over 25 billion tons of bauxite and perhaps up to one-half of the world's reserves. In addition, Guinea's mineral wealth includes more than 4billion tons of high-grade iron ore, significant diamond and gold deposits, and undetermined quantities of uranium. Possibilities for investment and commercial activities exist in all these areas, but Guinea's poorly developed infrastructure and rampant corruption continue to present obstacles to large-scale investment projects.
8. Mozambique(Aluninium, coal, iron, oil and gas, steel, gold, gemstone, cement, marbles, Arable land and ocean)
Mozambique possesses considerable quantities of natural resources but contrary to many African countries,Mozambique is still predominantly virgin soil as most natural resources are yet to be explored, including natural gas, coal, mineral sands, hydropower and most likely oil as well. But the most common natural mineral in this country is, without doubt, aluminum. The annual production of it is approximately 580,000 tons, which is a huge number. Consequently, it forms 30% of the country’s exports. Aside aluminum, Mozambique also exports beryllium and tantalum all over the world. Mozambican soil is rich in limestone, cement, marbles, gemstones, coals, iron, gold, oil, gas, and steel. All of these minerals have made the economy of the country more stable and their production has become really active in the past years. In 2010–2011, Ana
TOP 5 AFRICAN COUNTRIES WITH NATURAL RESOURCES
WHAT ARE NATURAL RESOURCES?
Any substance, organism, medium, or object present in nature without human action and which in most cases is used to meet human, animal, or plant needs is termed to be a natural resource.
Considering the fast increase of human population, and the relentless ecological footprint growth, the sustainable management of natural resources has become a major issue. Africa is made up of the most divergent and converging countries with respect to their wealth of soil and subsoil. How to understand that Africa is not the richest continent in the world?
This paradox is also remarkable on the continent because the country's richest in natural resources are also the poorest economically speaking, except for a few.
In this episode of Mantis Eye, we highlight Top 5 African countries with Natural resources.
BELOW ARE THE TOP 5 AFRICAN COUNTRIES WITH NATURAL RESOURCES
1. Nigeria
The almost essential economy of the continent, it is the leading producer and exporter of crude oil. Also, it is the fifth Oil Producer in the world in the OPEC (Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries). Oil thus represents 40% of the country’s gross domestic product. It also has other under-exploited natural resources such as gas, coal, gold, and bauxite. Employing 60% of the working population, its agricultural sector also remains under-exploited.
2. Botswana
The world’s leading producer of diamonds (by value), the majority of which are gem quality. He alone owns 35% of African diamonds. Besides these diamonds, gold, nickel, soda ash, and copper are mined there.
3. South Africa
It is a nation with huge, diverse mineral potential. It is notably world number one in the production of chromium, manganese, platinum, vanadium, vermiculite, and number two in the production of ilmenite, palladium, rutile, and zirconium.
4. The Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC)
Every mobile phone contains coltan, and the DRC is the world’s largest producer. It is one of the giants' producers of diamonds and copper in Africa, with respectively 34 and 13% of the total production of the continent. Finally, its mineral deposits are estimated at $ 24 trillion.
5. Namibia
It has an annual income of which a quarter comes from uranium receipts. Its diverse mining industry is on the rise, with significant sales increasing year on year.
Pan African Resources has reported a near 44% slump in interim in headline earnings per share, as the miner produced and sold less gold during the period while net-debt skyrocketed to almost $229 million. Business Day TV spoke to CEO, Cobus Loots about his assessment of the performance.
Human rights advocate and pan-Africanist, Brian Kagoro says the west is continuing the colonisation of Africa through the exploitation of its resources. Brian Kagoro, from Zimbabwe, was one of the keynote speakers during the opening ceremony of the 2025 Pre-Summit symposium of the African Union.

During the boom, most new production in Africa came from brownfield investments. Many of the largest and best African resources remain untapped. What needs to happen for these projects to materialised?
Expansion of the pillar mining activities at the world-class Evander ore body will add 65 000 low-cost ounces per annum over the next 13 years to Pan African Resources' annual gold production rate.
West African Resources is West Africa’s newest gold producer, pouring first gold at its Sanbrado project in March 2020, ahead of schedule and under budget.
West African expects to produce more than three hundred thousand ounces of gold from Sanbrado in its first year of production. It expects to average production of more than 200,000 ounces of gold over the first five years.
Since commencing production at Sanbrado, West African announced the acquisition of the 1.1 million ounce Toega gold deposit and it expects to deliver a resource, reserve and life of mine production update before the end of this year.
Pan African Resources CEO Cobus Loots joined Steve Darling from Proactive to discuss the company's performance and future prospects.
Pan African Resources is a South African-based gold mining company with attractive margins and long-life assets. Despite some challenges in the past year, the company is optimistic about its growth and expansion plans. The production side has seen improvements, with increased production at the Barberton underground mine and progress at the Evander underground mine.
Loots emphasized the balance between underground mining and surface operations, with the Kulu operation performing well and generating strong cash flows. Additionally, Pan African Resources highlights the favorable gold price it has been receiving. Continuous improvements and safety measures are vital aspects of the company's operations.
One significant development for Pan African Resources is the upcoming construction of the Mintails project, a promising addition to its portfolio. With a reserve of nearly 2 million ounces and a low acquisition cost, the project is expected to produce 50,000 ounces of gold annually for 20 years at attractive margins.
The company also emphasizes its positive outlook for gold prices, its growth potential, and its commitment to maintaining and increasing dividends for shareholders. Pan African Resources aims to expand its presence in the US market, highlighting its offerings in terms of dividends, growth, and profitability.

Pan African Resources PLC CEO Cobus Loots takes Proactive's Stephen Gunnion through the company's interim results to 31 December 2023.
The mining firm experienced a significant uptick in performance, driven by increased production and a favourable gold price environment, particularly in South African rand. The impact of operational enhancements at its Barberton operations and its tailings retreatment portfolio including Elikhulu saw substantial production boosts, positioning the company to meet its full-year guidance of 180,000 to 190,000 ounces of gold.
Loots highlighted the successful management of costs despite inflationary pressures, attributing part of the efficiency to the depreciation of the rand against the dollar, higher gold output reducing unit costs, and prudent cost controls. Notably, the company's investment in renewable energy and water recycling initiatives has started to pay off, with the first solar plant saving approximately $13 per ounce in all-in-sustaining costs (AISC).
Cash generation surged by 130%, enabling further investments in projects like the Mogale Tailings Retreatment project, which is on schedule and budget to enhance Pan African's production for the next two decades.
The Evander mine also reported increased output, thanks to infrastructure upgrades.
Safety improvements were emphasized as a crucial part of the company's operations, especially significant given the proportion of production from tailings and surface operations.
